Comics & Complication: Spider-Man and the Public Health Crisis

Welcome to the fourth Comics & Complication series. The first dealt with the concept of heroism and The Nail, the second looked into anger and World War Hulk, and the third is about comics as propaganda for social change. ReedPOP, Rebellion, BPAL Removed from CBLDF Corporate Partnership List

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab is a maker of scents and oils well-known in fandom circles for products inspired by the likes of creators like Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker, and franchises like The Dark Crystal, Hellboy, Labyrinth, and Grendel, among others.  The company is also well known for its stance on social activism, explaining on its website that: "At Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, we have never shied away from our civic duty, and since the inception of the company, we have made it a point to do everything within our power to support organizations that provide emergency aid and disaster relief, support environmental and conservation causes, help the homeless, protect civil liberties and reproductive rights, and offer succor to the LGBTQ community and marginalized ethnic, racial, and minority religious groups." Earlier today, in light of events that led to Charles Brownstein's resignation from the CBLDF, the company requested to be removed from the CBLDF's list of corporate members.

Official Logo of the CBLDF.
Official Logo of the CBLDF.

It would appear that BPAL is not the only corporation to have been removed from the CBLDF list of corporate members in recent days.  While confirming BPAL's removal by comparing the current list on the CBLDF's website to the same page archived on the evening of June 20, 2020, on Archive.org, it became apparent that in addition to BPAL, 2000 AD publisher Rebellion and event organizer ReedPOP have also been removed from the CBLDF's corporate members page listing since that time.

Corporate members on the list at the time of this writing include Abrams, Boom! Studios, Comixology, Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Discount Comic Book Service, Diamond Comic Distributors, FAKKU, Humble Bundle, IDW, Image Comics, Lion Forge, Neverwear, Oni Press, Penguin Random House, Scholastic Corporation, Valiant, VIZ Media, and the Will & Ann Eisner Family Foundation.  For comparison's sake, an archive of the CBLDF corporate member page was taken at the time of this posting.

In a statement, BPAL explained:

We at BPAL were surprised and disappointed to learn this week about the events that led to Charles Brownstein's resignation from CBLDF, and have been listening carefully to further complaints and questions related to the org's ability to fulfill its stated mission, which is one we have supported eagerly in the past.

In light of these events, we have requested to be removed from the CBLDF's list of Corporate Members. We will be updating our site so that funds raised for CBLDF by various products will be routed to other orgs (TBD). In the meantime, proceeds from recent sales of those products will be held until we have fully updated our giving plan.

RWBY: The Official Manga From US Anime Series Coming From Viz Media

Viz Media is publishing RWBY: The Official Manga, an official manga adaptation of Rooster Teeth's popular American CGI anime , this time created by creators in Japan. RWBY (pronounced "Ruby") began streaming in 2013. It has since garnered a massive global fanbase whose cosplayers can be seen in every major convention across the US. Rooster Teeth holds the RTX convention in Austin, Texas every summer that draws 70,000 attendees.

In 2016, the series was licensed to Japanese television and dubbed into Japanese. To date seven seasons of the animated series have aired. The show has won the Streamy Award for 4 years. Each episode gets an average of 7,000,000 viewers across streaming platforms. It has been compared to Avatar: The Last Airbender in its American adoption of anime action and storytelling dynamics.

There was a US comic adaptation recently published by DC Comics, but the fans feel the Japanese manga version is closer to the vision of the show. Viz Media released a press release today:

"From Buta Kinami comes RWBY: The Official Manga based on the international hit anime series from Rooster Teeth and Monty Oum.

RWBY is set in the magical world of Remnant where four girls — the incredibly talented Ruby Rose; heiress Weis Schne; mysterious fighter Blake Beladonna; and Ruby's supportive and  fiery older sister, Yang Xiao Long — are Beacon Academy students training to become Huntreses who fight creatures known as "Grimm."

Together, they combine their unique strengths to form the ultimate girl group – RWBY.

Training to become Remnant's greatest monster huntresses is not the only challenge fort eam RWBY as they adjust to a new school, new relationships, and, of course, teenage drama. For Ruby, battling Grimm seems much easier than dealing with Weis Schne!

Originally in Japan and now published in English by VIZ Media, RWBY: The  Official Manga welcomes a new era of Western content in a dominant Japanese medium. The establishment of empowered female protagonists are breaking down barriers for female representation in Shonen manga."

RWBY: The Official Manga is out on July 21st in paperback and ebook.

25 Modern Comics That May Jump In Price – Comic Store In Your Future

Rod Lamberti of Rodman Comics of Ankeny, Iowa, writes weekly for Bleeding Cool. Find previous columns here. He writes; my previous 25 hot comics columns were about what comic back issues were hot at the time. In these times, I thought, why not try a Top 25 comics of affordable issues that have the potential to go up in value?

This list and the research for it was done by me and me only. If there were a sure way to pick up comics before they explode in price, I would be buying back issues a lot more and not writing about it, and there would be a lot of people doing it. I do these to help keep me up to date on back issues and because I enjoy doing these and like to share the information.

  1. Batman #436 $8. Tim Drake has taken a back seat to Batman's son Damian it seems at times. Though, Tim Drake is still popular as a past Robin and currently being featured in the pages of Young Justice. His first appearance in Batman 436 from 1989 seems like a steal. Here in my store, Tim has a loyal following.
  2. Captain America #360 $13. From 1989 introduces the first full appearance of Crossbones. Granted, Crossbones made it to the big screen, and as tends to happen with Marvel second-string villains in the movies, he was killed off. Crossbones is one of Captain America's cooler looking villains and has seen a lot of use over the years. A new storyline focusing on Crossbones that makes him even better liked by readership could be the breakout to make his first appearance more sought out.
  3. Convergence Superman #2 $16 From 2015. Jonathan Kent as a baby's first appearance. Here in the store, young Jonathan's adventures with Damian were well-liked. The Adventures of the Supersons limited series was enjoyed by the readership here, and the characters together had a following. Jonathan's sudden aging so that he could be in the current Legion of Superheroes was a mixed bag for his fans here. Will Jonathan Kent still be featured in the DCU once Bendis moves on from the Legion? Will the character find renewed excitement? Time will tell.
  4. Daredevil #270 1st Blackheart $15. From 1989. Blackheart is introduced in this issue. Blackheart is the son of Mephisto. Mephisto has been a big villain throughout Marvel's history. Could Blackheart play a more prominent role in future Marvel storylines? Also, this issue guest-stars Spider-man. Not bad for an old comic.
  5. Detective Comics #608 1st Anarky $10. From 1990. Anarky's first appearance. Anarky briefly even had his own comic series. Could the future hold something for an Anarky comeback?
  6. Fantastic Four #558 $10. from 2008. This issue is Old Man Logan's first appearance. Old Man Logan had his own series and was on an X Men team. Logan may be old, though; I doubt he will stay in limbo forever.
  7. Iron Man #219 $9. From 1987. The Ghost makes his first appearance in this issue. Though not quite the same character in the Ant-Man and Wasp movie, the Ghost may see the big screen again one day. If so, this issue may see renewed interest.
  8. Journey Into Mystery #622 $7. 2011. Ikol first shows up in this issue. The rumor was Ikol may be used in the upcoming Loki steaming show. This issue shot up quickly in price when the rumor was first reported, though as often happens, the price promptly dropped. If Ikol does indeed make an appearance in the Loki show, this issue could be in demand again.
  9. JSA #1 $10. From 2007. Cyclone's first appearance. It has been reported that the JSA will be showing up in the upcoming Black Adam film. The question now is which characters from the JSA will be making it to the big screen? Could Cyclone be one of them?
25 Modern Comics May Increase In Price - Comic Store In Your Future.
25 Modern Comics May Increase In Price – Comic Store In Your Future.
  10. Justice Society of America #1 $9 from 1992. Jesse Quick's first appearance. A favorite character of mine back in the day. She was like a walking DC Comic history encyclopedia. She even knew who the Young All-Stars were. Yes, I am one of the few who remembers the characters. Jesse Quick has already made it to the small screen by being featured on the T.V. show the Flash. Could she be making the jump to the big screen by being one of the JSA members to be used in the Black Adam movie? If there is a new Justice Society of America comic book, could she be a member of the team?
  11. Legends #1 $12 from 1986. The Suicide Squad is coming back to the big screen. The "Wall" herself, Amanda Waller, makes her first appearance in this issue. Will she be as cool as in the upcoming movie as she was in the comics? Time will tell. Also, in my humble opinion, Brimstone, one of the coolest looking comic villains, ever makes his first appearance in this issue.
  12. Legends #3 $11 from 1986. Amanda Waller puts together her Suicide Squad, who does battle with Brimstone, and the team lives up to their name.
  13. Marvel Premiere #57 $10 from 1980. Doctor Who's first appearance in a Marvel Comic. Doctor Who has been around for a long time and has a big following. The issue even exclaims 1st American Comicbook Appearance! Could America comic fans take notice of this decades-old comic?
  14. New Mutants #9 $15 the first appearance of Selene from 1983. The New Mutants movie has had a wild ride and is currently supposed to come out in August. After so many delays, I am hoping the film does well. I would love to see the many characters from the first New Mutants run on the big screen if we were lucky enough to get future New Mutant movies. That might be a long shot though with the New Mutants movie originally due out in 2018. That said, Selene is the Black Witch of the Hellfire Club and has long been a foe of the X Men.
  15. New Mutants #16 $10 from 1984. First appearance of Warpath brother to the original Thunderbird. Poor Thunderbird, one of the few characters to die and actually stay dead in comics. The X Men pretty much never give him a second thought along with a lot of the fans. That said, Warpath was on one of the many versions of X Force. There could be a future for this character. The question is, when?
  16. New Titans Annual #2 $15 from 1993. The first appearance of Adrian Chase who would become the Vigilante and first appearance of Lyla, who would later become Harbinger in the Crisis of Infinite Earths limited series. Adrian Chase would even go on to be featured in a fifty issue run of his own Vigilante run. Both of the characters would also join Thunderbird as one of the few comic book heroes to die and stay dead though both characters would go on to be used on T.V.
  17. Point One #1 $10 from 2011 is the first appearance of Sam Alexander, who becomes Nova. A kid, Nova? 'Nuff said.
  18. Spawn #9 $10 from 1993 is the first appearance of Angela. Though she first appears in an Image comic, Marvel would go on to buy her from Neil Gaiman, where Marvel would then announce her as Thor's sister. Back in 2013, Mile High was selling Spawn 9 for $70. Marvel keeps trying to use the character in recent years. The question is, will the character catch on?
  19. Superboy #9 $15 from 1994. First appearance of King Shark who is due to be in the big screen Suicide Squad movie. This issue was hot though it has cooled off a lot. When the Suicide Squad movie comes out, will that get people excited about King Shark?
  20. Teen Titans #20 $4 from 2018. Crush, daughter to Lobo, makes her first appearance in this issue. Will Crush be able to be a long-standing character? Time will tell.
  21. Uncanny X-Men #191 $12 from 1985. First Nimrod. Nirmod is the ultimate Sentinel. A long time foe of the X Men. His first appearance seems almost criminally undervalued. Plus, this issue has Spider-man and a ton of guest stars.
  22. Uncanny X-Men #201 $10 from 1986. Cable's first appearance as baby Nathan Summers. Storm also takes over as the X Men's leader this issue. Cable used to be a super hot character. Will the future be kind enough to see Cable's popularity return?
  23. Uncanny X-Men #244 $35 from 1989 First Jubilee. The flashbacks to the X Men animated T.V. show alone by reading Jubliee's first appearance makes it worth it.
  24. X-Factor 15 $10 from 1987 The first gathering of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse. Over the years, various Marvel writers have made their own versions of Apocalypse's Four Horsemen. Even Deadpool was a Horseman of Apocalypse in a future storyline from the Extraordinary X Men title. It is only a matter of time before another writer wants to have a Four Horsemen of Apocalypse storyline.
  25. X-Factor #92 $7. From 1993 is the first appearance of Exodus. This issue also has a hologram cover of Havok. Exodus is currently being featured in the X books and could see his popularity increase.

There you have it. Various back issues that do not cost a fortune. If one buys them, hopefully, they will get a good read out of them if nothing else, and afterward, maybe they will go up in price.

Attack On Titan and How Anime-Manga Success Works

Attack On Titan is still the most buzzed-about international anime series in the world right now. It's practically the Game of Thrones of anime. There are other, more recent hits like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, but they haven't hit the massive numbers as Attack On Titan. Both series achieved success in the Western – mainly US and UK – market in the same way, and it's worth a look at how that works.

In Japan, Manga are Hits First

In Japan, a manga or Light Novel series first becomes a bestseller before the publisher decides to invest in greenlighting an anime series. The anime serves as a marketing tool for the series, designed to attract new audiences to the series who might then go on to buy the books. This pushes the series into a higher-selling bracket and turns it into a full-blown franchise with various spinoffs – toys, videogames, merchandising, even stage plays and audio dramas. The IP becomes a virtually self-sustaining money-making machine. This is what every creator and publisher hopes for with a series.

Still from the Attack On Titan anime series
Still from the Attack On Titan anime series

In the US, Anime are Hits First

In the US and the West, the success of a manga series is actually somewhat reversed. Fans usually discover a new series first as an anime series before deciding to buy the original manga version. Attack On Titan is a particularly interesting case study because Kodansha Comics began publishing its English edition before the anime premiered. The sales of the manga were reportedly disastrously low. Then the first season of the anime premiered, and the series became an international phenomenon. Fans in the US and the West began buying the manga series and pushed it to bestseller charts, its sales rivalling, sometimes even beating sales for The Walking Dead comics, which had been the bestselling comic series in the US.

This indicates something that I've long suspected, that something doesn't have any real cultural impact in the US until it's on TV. Fans of Attack On Titan didn't know it existed until it became an anime series. The vast majority of manga series only became hits because they had anime series, including Inuyasha, the Dragonball series, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In the ShellOne Piece, Naruto, Bleach and pretty much any hit right now. Many fans don't even know these have manga series. Back in the 1980s, manga were sold on the strength of being manga, but that market has changed drastically. Nowadays, hardly anyone talks about Lone Wolf & Cub the original manga series than the movies that adapted the manga. Even George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones novels, which were already multimillion copy-selling international bestsellers, didn't become part of mainstream culture until it became a successful HBO TV show.

All this leads to one conclusion about any piece of culture in the US: if it ain't on TV, it doesn't exist.

Attack On Titan is currently streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation.

Comics & Complication – Propaganda for Social Movements

Time for another edition of Comics & Complication. In the first article, we dug into JLA: The Nail and the concept of heroism and in the second we looked at World War Hulk and the idea of anger. This week, we're looking at how propaganda in comics can be used to influence social movements. Superman entered World War II before the Americans did, appearing on the front lines as early as 1939, even preceding Pearl Harbor. After he single-handedly demolished the Siegfried line, he delivered Hitler and Stalin to the League of Nations in Geneva. Joe Siegel and Jerry Shuster successfully delivered astute commentary on what was occurring during the Holocaust by having Superman square up with Hitler and state, "I'd like to land a strictly non-Aryan sock on your Jaw." It was a massive piece of propaganda for a social movement in mainstream comics.

Other Comics Follow Suit With Propaganda Storylines

It didn't take long for other comic creators to follow suit, and soon a plethora of storylines and heroes appeared to stand toe to toe with the füher himself. Captain America appeared at the forefront of these artistic battles, but even Disney had Donald Duck gracing movie posters where he threw tomatoes at Hitler's face with commendable accuracy for a being with only four fingers and no pants.

So successful was this effort from comic creators that sales actually boomed during the war. The humiliation of the Third Reich was not lost on those in Hitler's regime. In his book about comic books and propaganda, Fredrik Strömberg notes that Joseph Goebbels (Hitler's Nazi minister for Propaganda), allegedly cried out that Superman was a Jew. Goebbels even sent these America comics to Hitler himself, and one can only hope that he saw himself humiliated at the hands of this so-called Jewish superhero.

It was important for comics to represent the culture of the United States at that time, especially in curbing more effort and support in the war. Unfortunately, there are fewer heroes at the forefront for current discourse in the status quo but some creators are stepping up to the plate to change that. Writer Gail Simone recently fundraised over $230,000 for the Black Lives Matter movement, with notable industry favorites suck as Time sale and Jim Lee contributing to the cause. With racial tensions currently resulting in riots and violence, comic creators and fans once again gravitate towards the cause with the support of heroes who stand against systemic oppression and bigotry.

DC Comics Removes Warren Ellis Dinosaur Batman Story From Death Metal

It was a surprising piece of news, that Warren Ellis was going to write a two-page story in the Death Metal spinoff comic book Dark Nights: Death Metal Legends of the Dark Knights. Even more so that it would be telling the origin of an evil Bruce Wayne Batman from a Dark Dimension, who had transplanted himself into the body of a robot Tyrannosaurus Rex and went by the name of B-Rex. On his blog, Warren stated;

Yes, there is an evil Batman who is also a T-Rex. This is a thing I discovered when I was asked to write a two-page short comic about an evil Batman who is also a T-Rex. This is lockdown psychosis in full effect. "Hey, Warren, Scott Snyder invented an evil Batman who is also a T-Rex. Can you do me a two-page origin story of The Evil Batman Who Is Also A T-Rex?" And I say yes. Obviously.

That was before certain allegations, as reported on Bleeding Cool last night, went global as many women spoke out about their treatment by Warren over the years. Just now, DC Comics has issued the following statement to comic book retailers.

The previously announced two-page story in Dark Nights: Death Metal Legends of the Dark Knights #1 by Warren Ellis and Jim Cheung will be replaced with a two-page story written by Marguerite Bennett and illustrated by Jamal Igle.

There is no update regarding any of Warren's other work at DC Comics. He currently writes The Batman's Grave drawn by Bryan Hitch, which recently saw the seventh of the twelve planned issues published, and Bleeding Cool had learned that there were bigger projects planned for later in the year. We note however that there is currently a 'TBD' date attached to the scheduled eighth issue, previously scheduled for July.

Does Your Comic Shop Require A Mask To Shop?

I have had to write a lot these past 24 hours about mask-wearing in public spaces. I also run a comic shop in non-BC life, and the mask-wearing here in Ohio is about 70-30 people NOT wearing masks. The store I run is in a shopping mall, and it is not required for patrons to wear one in the mall, it is up to the individual business. We have decided to require one, which has led to a drop in business, me being called all manner of names and terrible things, and huffs and puffs from customers. It has also led to thank you's, more recommendations, and new customers as well. My question is this: Why? Why is the comic shop becoming a political touchstone about this?

Look, I am not here to start a war. I believe that wearing a mask helps prevent the spread of germs period. I am not saying that it is perfect or the ultimate barrier to preventing anything, but it does help. I fail to understand why some people get so bent out of shape about it like I walked up and punched one of their family members or something. I have yet to hear a thought out, realistic, and cohesive argument as to why it is a problem to throw a mask on for ten minutes when you get your comics at your local comic shop.

Does going to your local comic shop right now make you feel safe? Is your shop doing everything they can to make sure you have a safe environment to shop in? Does your shop require masks? If they do/don't, does it bother you either way? This is an incredibly stressful time for comic shop owners, and all of these questions go through my mind every time I open the door and see a mix of people with and without masks staring back at me.
