Morbius Set Photos Confirm Movie Is In the Same Universe as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man

Tom Holland got drunk and saved his version of Spider-Man, resulting in a deal between Sony and Disney to keep Spidey in the MCU. In his comments about that, Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige said that Spider-Man can “travel” between universes. What this means is that he’ll maintain a presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the character is available for Sony, too. When the new trailer for Morbius came out, eagle-eyed fans noticed a Spider-mural on a wall. Emblazoned with the word “Murderer!” it seems Morbius might be set in the MCU. It’s not without precedent. The old Marvel Television series, like Agents of SHIELD were also set in the MCU, but the film side of the house never acknowledged them. (Well, almost never.) Well, new set photos seem to confirm that Morbius is actually set in the same universe as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

Raimi might be poised to return to Marvel as the director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This would be incredible apropos, it seems, because if Morbius takes place in a world where Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man is active (and wanted for murder) that’s very interesting. The inclusion of Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes does complicate this theory. But it’s the multiverse, baby! Anything can happen.

In the MCU, we got J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson again. Only instead of a newspaper owner, he runs a conspiracy-theory website. We don’t get any new background images of Spider-Man himself. However, the set photos leaked online offered a new clue about where in the Spider-Verse Morbius takes place.

Why We Think Morbius Takes Place in the Same Universe as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man

The Andy Serkis-directed Venom 2 is filming right now, and some new set photos were though to confirm a Spider-Man connection. However, an anonymous person on Twitter shared their photos of the set, showing Jared Leto walking with a cane. This likely means these are Morbius reshoots. Now, reshoots on films are incredibly common and not a sign of trouble. However, the images above and below show something really interesting.

We see a question: “Where is Spider-Man?” and a Daily Bugle logo. Yet, this is not the DailyBugle.Net from Spider-Man: Far From Home. As the top image shows, this is the old-school newspaper Daily Bugle. The logo, the image of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man suggest that Morbius may take place in that universe. Also, by making Spider-Man vanished in the eyes of the public, it explains why he’s not actually in this movie or Venom. It’s also possible that this ties into the sequel to Into the Spider-Verse which could see Tobey Maguire and/or Tom Holland, reprise their roles via voice-acting.

One thing is for certain, Marvel and Sony have something up their sleeves for Spider-Man. His long-term future in the MCU is not certain. He’s got one more solo film and one more ensemble flick and that’s it. If Spider-Man continues in the MCU, maybe sharing the character this way is how Disney and Sony will achieve it.

What do you think? Do these set photos confirm that Morbius exists in the same universe as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man? Or are they just Easter eggs to make fans even more excited about Sony’s non-MCU offerings? Let us know what you think below.
