Hi Melon
Ed Greenberg of Collector's Paradise three-store comic book chain in California has come up with a new business solution in this time of strife. He writes, "sometimes during times of crisis, you come up with your best ideas, and I had an idea last night at 2am. I spent the next 3 hours building it into something that I believe can really shine in this situation we are in now, but also live on and become a feature of our stores after this crisis is over. I believe in this idea with all my heart, and I hope you prove me right. One of the things I always hear from our customers is that we are the best at recommending the right comics and graphic novels. You have learned to trust our tastes over the years, and I believe that this is our greatest asset. That's why we're launching Collector's Paradise CURATED, a curated selection of graphic novels based on 8 different categories."
Collector's Paradise Curated will consist of Collector's Paradise's eight most requested Graphic Novel selections: Marvel, DC, Image, Boom, Dark Horse, Mixed Indy, Young Adult, All Ages, and customers can choose to subscribe for 1-month, 3-months (discounted by 10%), or 6-months (discounted by 15%). Inside each curated selection, you will receive between 3-4 Graphic Novels + a few bonus comic books (all #1 issues) that they think are essential reading, but maybe under-read by fans of that publisher.
They guarantee at least a 20% discount and at least a $10 worth of added comic books. Subs will cost $50 a month, $135 for three months or $255 for a 6 month sub. Ed also says "We need influx of funds to keep going. With that in mind, we have added virtual gift cards to our website in $25, $50 and $100 denominations to see if any of you want to help out. These are not for use to pay for your products now (just use credit cards or paypal/venmo). Buy these for when we reopen and use the gift cards then. You can choose the store when you purchase the card, but don't worry, you'll be able to use them at any of our locations."
And he is also adding a new offer to their eBay sales. "We know you already trust us, but did you know we are an ebay platinum power seller with over 12K in 99.9% positive feedback? That is a HUGE accomplishment we are super proud of. During this time, we wanted to reward our customers who want to shop at our Ebay store, with a special offer: Order 4 or more items, get 15% OFF. Choose local pick up, and no shipping will be charged, and we can combine those items with anything else you order from our store. If the total is $40 or more after discount, we will ship to you, locally, for FREE."
Lots of comic book stores are trying to find ways to survive right now. This is Ed Greenberg's way. What is your store doing? Let us know at richjohnston@bleedingcool.com.

Last week Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins took to Instagram for a Q&A to answer fan questions about the status of the upcoming fantasy show. Fans have been eagerly awaiting an adaptation of The Wheel of Time for decades. However with the global pandemic shutting down production, it seems we might have to wait a bit longer. Let’s take a look at what Rafe had to say.
The first season of Wheel of Time will run eight episodes on Amazon Prime. Production is completed on episodes 1-4. Actors and crew were still shooting episodes 5-6 and prepping episodes 7-8 when production shut down. Rafe is also actively working on writing season two. Hopefully this quarantine will give him plenty of time to do that. Post-production is continuing remotely.
Rafe is approving visual effects and direction while editing from home. These visual effects seem to primarily revolve around the use of magic in the show. This magic is the ‘channeling’ that the Aes Sedai do when accessing the One Power. Apparently Rafe “screamed” when he first saw footage of Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) channeling. We assume that this was a good scream. There will be CGI used for some of the visual effects. But the show is trying to utilize practical effects as much as they can.
The Wheel of Time Q&A informs us that the show will significantly condense the journey that Rand and Mat undertake in the first book. The duo from Emond’s Field visit approximately 20 locations in the book, and that was not feasible to include in one season. The trip will mostly occur along Caemlyn Road, where most of the pivotal events for them occur. Rafe says that some minor characters may be combined but there will be few “nutso” combinations “just for the sake of it.” There will be some new characters that will be composite characters from smaller roles from the book.
Harriet McDougal, the widow of WOT author Robert Jordan and also the editor of the novels, has been on set in Prague. She has read all of the scripts and provided feedback whenever she thought the show was straying from the books. Harriet is an acting consultant and producer for the show.
Author Brandon Sanderson is also a consultant for the series. Sanderson is the author who came in to finish Wheel of Time when Robert Jordan died in 2007. He has read all of the scripts and given notes. Rafe Judkins is a fan of Sanderson, and would like him to be more involved. However Sanderson has a strict timeline for his own work, so he is too busy to do more.
Thanks to our friends over at Dragonmount for summarizing this Wheel of Time Q&A for us. Head over to their site for more tidbits on what to expect from the first season of this highly anticipated fantasy show. And stay tuned to Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter for more news on the status of your favorite shows during this unprecedented time.

Welcome to another recap of The Walking Dead, where we’ll discuss last night’s episode, “Look At the Flowers.”
Need a reminder of what went down last week? Check out my recap of that episode right here.
In this week’s episode, we see the ramifications of Alpha’s murder as well as the role that Negan played in Carol’s secret plot.
“I have your word?”
In a flashback sequence, we see how Carol and Negan’s deal came to life. Carol plainly asks him to bring her Alpha’s head. Negan, however, is hesitant to do so because he’s aware of Carol’s status as a badass; if she couldn’t do it, what happens if he fails? He doesn’t want to endanger the lives of anybody in Alexandria. Carol brutally points out that keeping Negan locked up forever isn’t going to help those people forget all the terrible things he’s done, and he needs to take action in order to become a part of the community. He accepts, and we’re now in the present day as Carol sticks Alpha’s head onto a stick in the ground.
Negan is pleading to Carol to take him back to Alexandria so he can open up another chapter of his life and just move on. Carol, despite her satisfaction in watching a zombified Alpha snarl and groan atop the stick at the Whisperer border, is furious at Negan as she said she wanted the deed done quickly. He counters that he wanted to get out of there alive, so he had to take his time and play it safe. Carol says she isn’t ready to get back to Alexandria just yet, so Negan will have to wait until she’s had her alone time.
“Look forward, not back.”
At their safehouse, the residents of Hilltop are licking their wounds. Ezekiel is berating himself for falling unconscious and losing track of the children, but the ever-positive Jerry assures him that it wasn’t his fault and that everybody is okay. Magna walks in and Jerry is struck with joy, giving her a great big bear hug. Eugene is helping Rosita nurse a bad bruise on her abdomen, and she reminds him that he has a meeting with Stephanie that he needs to honour. She tells him that he has to tell everyone about her since he’s been keeping it from everyone. He gets up and gathers everyone’s attention; he’s awkward at first but Ezekiel backs him up. He offers an impassioned reason for what he’s doing and how he needs to find good people after all the terrible things he and the group just went through.
Yumiko approaches Magna and says that she should go with Eugene and the others to meet Stephanie. Magna appreciates the sentiment but says she likes where she currently is and wants a bit of a routine to help guide her along. She tells Yumiko that she’s the one who needs to go on this adventure. Yumiko offers up some excuses but realises that Magna’s right: it’ll be good for her.
Jerry’s playing with one of his kids when he spots Ezekiel getting a horse ready. He tells Jerry that he’s about to leave. He and Jerry share a beautiful goodbye; they’ve been through a lot together and Jerry says that he’s going to miss him.
“I silenced the Alpha.”
Beta and two Whisperers approach the border and find Alpha’s head on the stick. One of the Whisperers tells Beta that he’s now the Alpha. He seemingly doesn’t take this news too well, as he grabs the Whisperer’s head and pushes him close enough to Alpha that she takes a bite out of his cheek.
Negan heads to where he kept Lydia strapped to a chair, only to find the chair empty. Daryl sneaks up behind him and points his crossbow in his face, asking for an explanation. Negan says that he killed Alpha. He pulls her mask from his jacket and says that Carol let him out so he can infiltrate the group and kill Alpha.
Carol is walking through the woods but she’s beginning to hear voices, someone calling her name. She turns around and finds Alpha starting at her. She tells Carol that she’s always watching.
“You can’t accept what you’ve done.”
Beta and the cheek-less Whisperer are walking through a walker-infested town. The Whisperer’s coughing catches the attention of a nearby walker, and Beta stabs him to let the walker get to him. He reveals he’s carrying Alpha’s head in a bag, and listens intently to her groans as if she’s talking to him. He enters a house and makes some noise to draw out whatever walker may in there with him, but he’s alone. Alone with Alpha. He enters a room and spots a poster on the wall that infuriates him. He grabs a guitar and smashes it to smithereens.
Carol continues her walk but is accosted by Alpha. She says that Carol is feeling guilt, and to truly kill Alpha is to kill herself too. Alpha distracts Carol enough to let a walker sneak up behind her and nearly kill her, but she manages to stick something up its brain.
“We always knew how this would end.”
Eugene, Yumiko, and Ezekiel are riding on their horses when they come across a couple of caged walkers, with birds inside but just out of their reach. Yumiko wonders if it’s some kind of warning. They split up to clear the area of walkers and Ezekiel faces some trouble as his newly-developed cough gets the better of him and nearly lets a walker chomp his face. He quickly stabs it as he catches his breath.
In his fortress of solitude, Beta finds a vinyl and a record player. He blasts some tunes, and the nearby walkers begin to flock.
Daryl is walking Negan through the woods. Negan says he understands why Daryl would be pissed, since Carol went behind his back to get what she wanted. Daryl says he might be pissed about Hilltop, where his actions nearly got some children killed. Negan stops in his tracks and looks at Daryl with remorse, but Daryl pushes him forward before he can become too remorseful.
Negan leads Daryl to where Carol kept Alpha’s head but it isn’t there anymore. Daryl is frustrated and points his weapon at Negan again, but some Whisperers cock their weapons and point them at Daryl. They say that Negan killed Alpha, which makes him the new Alpha. They kneel in recognition, which gets a big laugh from Negan.
Back at Beta’s walker rave, he watches from the balcony while a horde gathers below him. He has tears in his eyes, and tears off half his mask.
The Whisperers have Daryl all tied up, and Negan falls back into Negan as we first met him; brash, quite an asshole, but a man who has a way with words. He asks for one of their shotguns and after some show-boating, he shoots one of them and dispatches the rest.
Eugene and the others are resting under a bridge with Ezekiel awake to keep watch. Out of nowhere, his horse makes noise and falls to the ground. He rushes to investigate and sees that one of the walkers he faced managed to get a bite out of the horse. Ezekiel comforts it and puts it out of its misery. Yumiko approaches him and offers her condolences, but Ezekiel isn’t having any of it. He wants to leave as he doesn’t want to endanger the both of them. Yumiko manages to convince him to stay by saying that nobody knows what their future holds.
Carol enters some kind of shack, with Alpha still on her tail. Carol tries to reach for something while on a stool but the ceiling collapses on her, trapping her under beams and debris. She spots a walker crawling its way to her. Alpha is telling her to give up and give in, to finally die so she can never hurt anybody ever again. All those people she’s hurt, from her daughter to Ezekiel, and now she can stop it all from continuing. As the walker etches ever closer, Carol finally decides what she wants. She wants to live. She manages to loosen herself and stand up, killing the walker and collapsing onto the ground.
“
Daryl and Negan are waiting at the border for Carol to show up but there’s no sign of her. Negan confesses to Daryl that joining the Whisperers felt good because for the first time in nearly ten years, he felt respected and wanted. But he admits Alpha took it too far when she attacked Hilltop. Daryl walks away, with Negan following. Later, Daryl lets Carol into Alexandria without a word spoken between them.
Eugene, Ezekiel, and Yumiko keep riding when they see a city in the distance. They enter the city and find the strangest sight: there are walkers everywhere but they’re all dressed up and handcuffed to various objects like rocking chairs and cars. Ezekiel finds this entire image incredibly funny and can’t control his laughter. They then see a woman with purple hair in the distance. She greets them extremely enthusiastically.
Back with Beta, he thanks Alpha and says that he can finally see now. He pulls out a knife and stabs her. He heads to the door where the walkers are furiously snarling, but they begin to follow him when he makes his way outside. It’s revealed that he skinned Alpha’s face and stitched half of it to his existing mask. He then leads the walkers to his next mission.
The End
This was an odd episode. Not much went on but we got a lot of character progression. I’m looking forward to seeing Negan hopefully ingratiate himself back into Alexandrian life. He deserves it.
Catch me here next week for my recap of the penultimate episode of the season, “The Tower.”

Recently, we mentioned we had come across an early copy of Batman #92 and Batman #93 and took a look inside. We've also seen several issues of Empyre comics. Both Empyre #0 issues are out this Wednesday, with #1 out next week. There will be no major spoilers here but we going to be making some general observations. If you want to avoid all spoilers, stop reading now, as we put down Empyre: Avengers #0 and pick up Empyre: Fantastic Four #0. Just as writer Al Ewing was accompanied with House Of X artist Pepe Larraz for that, so the Fantastic Four has Powers Of X artist RB Silva. Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 looks just as gorgeous as a result.
Empyre: Avengers #0 set up the battleground and now the initial battle is over. We learn the justification for the Skrull and the Kree joining together, as well as serving as their immediate targets — the revived Cotati. Even with the Swordsman standing over them and the returning Celestial Messiah, it's unlikely that just the emergence of the Cotati was signaled by just a few weeds on the Moon. Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 begins far, far away with a very different perspective on the war from an intergalactic perspective. That means the introduction of a brand new alien with the kind of name that will keep her in good stead with The Collector, The Stranger, and The Grandmaster. Meet The Profiteer, sister to the Grandmaster and with her own Elder way of doing things.
If there's an intergalactic war, the Profiteer is going to supply both sides, at the right price. She did very well during the Kree/Skrull War, especially dealing with the media rights when it came down to one Skrull versus one Kree, on repeat. Maybe she did better out of Incoming #1 than Marvel did.
So while the entertainment commences, what of the Fantastic Four? We see them arriving with the armadas in Empyre: Avengers #0 but how did they get there?
They've broken down in deep space. It appears that the intergalactic economy has totally crashed, and Mister Fantastic has predicted a cosmic economic meltdown. Strangely on topic. So getting back will be a lot harder. We all know what happened to the Altarian Dollar, the Flainian Pobble Bead and the Triganic Pu. You know what helps an economy in such situations? A war, and as we all know now, the Kree/Skrull war has just ended. Handy that Empyre is on its way. There's a Baby Yoda reference too. Will this count as the first mention of The Child in a Marvel comic book, before the Star Wars comic line gets around to doing it? Well, you know what comic book speculators are like. Profiteers, the lot of them.

Every vampire tale has a hunter who has the skills, training, and weapons to take down the undead. These characters are smooth, dexterous, and usually have an arsenal of crosses, holy water, and other Christian-based tools to turn the creatures of the night into a dusty (or in some stories, melty) pile. In Benny Beck: Vampire Killer, our main man is Jewish and uses his faith’s Star of David as ninja stars to take down a cabal of Nazi vamps.
Written by our very own Gregory Paul Silber and illustrated by Jonah Newman, the four-page comic gets right to the action. Even though Benny would rather be eating his mom’s brisket, he must continue the centuries-old family tradition of fighting the undead to make the world a safer place. Especially since these are not just plain old bloodsuckers. They are Nazi bloodsuckers, making them a million times worse.
The comic is a lighthearted take on the vampire tale, mixing action and humor in four pages. Benny is cool and calm as he beats Nazi butt and saves the Golem they stole. He’s likable and funny, and hopefully, we get to see more of his adventures. It’s also refreshing to see that other religious symbols besides Christian ones are effective in taking down evil.

Bill Schanes, former Vice President of Purchasing of Diamond Comic Distributors, is a comics legend. He founded Pacific Distributors almost fifty years ago, and joined Diamond almost twenty years after that. He stepped down from Diamond Comic Distributors in 2013, though he continues to visit comic book stores, travelling the world. We briefly quoted him in an article regarding DC Comics statements about print and digital comics distribution, during the current coronavirus lockdown. As a pioneer in the establishment of the comic book direct market who enabled stores to order comics accurately from publishers with better discounts, Bill Schanes changed the very nature of the artform and industry. He also oversaw the rise of Diamond to dominate the direct market, with exclusive deals for the biggest comic book publishers. Schanes was also part of Diamond's early forays into digital distribution. And he has now expressed his thoughts regarding the current situation with greater verbosity. He writes on Facebook;
"With Diamond Comic Distributors and Diamond Book Distributors both temporally halting all shipments of products to both the comic book specialty retailers and the book channel, for the reasons stated (concern for the health of their employees and non essential government mandated closures), I find it more than curious as the traditional book channel publishers and distributors continue to operate as if there is no pandemic happening on a global basis.
So while they appear to be champions of their wholesale accounts, they are putting their employees at risk to exposure of the Coronavirus, plus their employees families, friends and people they potentially come in contact with…..profits over public safety. Not to mention, it's only a matter of time until all 50 US states order mandatory shut down for all but essential businesses.
It also provides an uneven advantage/disadvantage to those retailers who can still open their doors Vs those who aren't allowed to do so. Plus, the large .coms stand to benefit the most, taking sales and profits out of the comic book and book store sectors, who desperately need these sales now, more than ever.
I view the book publishers and book distributors as being irresponsible to the overall public health and safety, and would urge those publishers who sell books through these book distributors and their customers to discontinue until such time as the worst of the pandemic has subsided."

Andromeda, an Atlantean military leader, joins the team. Iceman and Beast are kinda dicks about it. If it was Sub-Mariner trying to join, I’m sure they wouldn’t have said these things.
The rest of this story is the end of Cloud. We learn that the reason s/he is able to transition, when she takes human from, from male to female is because there are two actual people, who are in a hospital, whose body she uses. She’s actually an alien from a species that exist only as nebulae, so taking a human form requires her to imitate something she can see—she’s not creating a new body, she’s copying one. And she came to Earth for a reason that, up until this issue, she’d forgotten: She was here to save the stars, which are apparently disappearing, and a Cosmic Cube is what gave her the voice to speak for the stars.
So, the team goes against the “Star Thief” and save the day. The Cosmic Cube no longer needs Cloud, and she says in space to return to being a nebula.
There’s a seemingly harmless/cute backup story featuring Sassafras the dog, but the last panel reveals that Manslaughter is back.
Oh, and Beast gives a signal watch to his girlfriend…

The Dresden Files marks its 20th anniversary this year. And author Jim Butcher is celebrating by releasing not one, but two new books in the series. The first book will be Peace Talks, the 16th book of The Dresden Files set for release on July 14th. It will be followed swiftly by another new Dresden Files novel. Book 17: Battle Ground is due out on September 29, 2020. According to the author, there will be approximately 23 books in the overall series. This means there is more of Harry Dresden coming in the future for fans to enjoy.
An official synopsis for Peace Talks is also available.
Peace Talks finds the supernatural nations of the world meeting up to negotiate an end to ongoing hostilities. Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard, joins the White Council’s security team to make sure the talks stay civil. But can he succeed, when dark political manipulations threaten the very existence of Chicago — and all he holds dear?
Author Jim Butcher made the announcement via a book trailer for Peace Talks that made its debut earlier this week on i09. The video also includes the surprise announcement for Battle Ground. An exclusive excerpt of Peace Talks is available over at EW.
The first book of The Dresden Files came out in the year 2000, and has become one of the most popular genre series of the last two decades. Butcher was fairly prolific for the first decade of publishing. He put out a new book in The Dresden Files every couple of years. It seems he might have hit a bit of writer’s block however, since the last book in the series Skin Game was published in 2015. Now it seems as though he is making up for lost time by releasing two books quickly in succession.
The Dresden Files has also seen life as a short-lived television show on the Syfy channel starring Arrow-alum Paul Blackthorne, although it only ran for one season in 2007. Since then fans have been petitioning to bring the show back on the air. In 2018, an announcement indicated that Fox had picked up the option for the series. However nothing has come of this new adaptation since then. There are also several graphic novels of the early Dresden Files books, published by Dynamite Entertainment. The graphic novels are available for purchase on Butcher’s website.

Welcome back Studio Coffee Folks! We’ve got a double dip of Ryan news this weekend as Ryan Gosling prepares for another space adventure and Ryan Reynolds suits up for his next project, an adaptation of the ’80s arcade game, Dragon’s Lair for Netflix. That and more, right here. Let’s get started!
Ryan Gosling is teaming up with The Martian writer Andy Weir on an adaptation of his upcoming novel Project Hail Mary. For the movie, Gosling will play an astronaut whose spaceship is left to save the planet from an as of yet unnamed space threat. The book will be published in Spring 2021 from Random House and those who’ve read it are pretty happy, per Deadline. MGM has its eyes on the project, with Gosling and Ken Kao set to produce.
It looks like Ryan Reynolds is heading into the Dragon’s Lair for Netflix. The video game, that is. THR has the exclusive from this weekend revealing that he’s in talks to both star in and produce a live-action adaptation of the 1980’s arcade game for Netflix. Even if you never played the game, you’ll probably recognize the work of famed Disney animator Don Bluth (Anastasiaa, The Secret of Nimh, All Dogs go to Heaven), which you can peak at above. Dragon’s Lair follows a classic story of a knight, Dirk the Daring, rescuing Princess Daphne from a nasty wizard and dragon team up; for the movie, Reynolds will obviously take on the role of Dirk. On the script side, Netflix is bringing on The Lego Movie and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark writers Dan and Kevin Hageman.
On March 13, WarnerMedia Entertainment shutdown all of its HBO series. Chief among those, as we’ve learned recently, are Barry, Bill Hader’s hilarious drama about an assassin turned amateur actor, and Succession, the corporate family drama from Jesse Armstrong. Both were in pre-pro at the time and HBO has now decided to completely push production dates back at this point. HBO’s statement reads: “We are looking forward to resuming preproduction when it is safe and healthy for everyone working on our shows to do so. Where possible, our writers are continuing to write remotely,” per Deadline. Barry fans (raises hand) are especially disappointed as the show’s return was already up in the air.
It’s Monday, it’s the beginning of the work week and, for those of us working from home, that makes getting back into the groove pretty tough. So, why not make a sandwich instead? Specifically, the sandwich of egg and the breakfast of one Harley Quinn, with a reciep from Bruno Oliver, who played short order cook Sal in Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey. Admittedly, it’s a pretty simple recipe and the only thing you might not have on hand is the ciabatta – but eggs, American cheese, bacon and hot sauce on any toasted, buttered bread is bound to be pretty tasty. Variety’s got the video here, in honor of Birds of Prey hitting digital on March 24. Hopefully, your sandwich doesn’t end up like hers.
Rick and Morty is going back on hiatus, but it’s not leaving without a parting gift. On Saturday, Adult Swim released a 5 minute short titled Samurai & Shogun. It’s extremely violent and, later, extremely weird! They go to space, there are portals and samurai and even an evil Rick. It’s directed and scripted by Kaichi Sato and voice actors Yohei Tadano and Keisuke Chiba lend their talents to Rick WTM72 and Shogun Morty respectively. Studio DEEN handled animation for the short. Apparently, voice acting for the rest of season 4 is completed, though rewrites and revisions are still underway, though we can expect it to air this year, per Collider.

Fans of The Martian rejoice! Author Andy Weir has a new book coming out. The book is titled Project Hail Mary and is due for release in Spring of 2021. Similar to The Martian, the new book by Weir will see a solitary man struggling to survive in the cold void of space. Project Hail Mary is about a lone astronaut living on a spaceship. He might be the last hope for saving the Earth. The book is said to be full of twists and turns, along with the clever ingenuity that made The Martian so successful.
MGM has already acquired the rights to the title, setting it up for a film release. Since The Martian was such a big hit, it is no surprise that the rights to Weir’s new book is selling long before the novel’s release. Actor Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in the project, and will also act as producer alongside Ken Kao. Gosling must really love playing astronauts. The last film he appeared in was 2018’s First Man where he played Neil Armstrong.
Project Hail Mary is Weir’s fourth novel, although it will only be his second published by a major company. Weir famously self-published The Martian online in 2011, and it was picked up by Random House in 2014. His most recent title Artemis came out in 2017 and has also been optioned for film adaptation. 20th Century Fox holds the rights to that title. Geneva Robertson-Dworet is onboard to write the screenplay, she also co-wrote Captain Marvel.
Project Hail Mary is due for release in Spring of 2021, and will be published by Penguin Random House. There is no word yet on who else is attached to the film adaptation, but we will certainly be updating with more news on this project in the future.

We’re more than 25% through 2020 and there haven’t been a whole lot of knock-my-socks-off albums yet. Saturn Return is one of the few. Laura and Lydia Slagle write songs that feel instantly familiar–like traditional classics.
Brandi Carlile is the most obvious comparison and probably the one who has been most successful with this sound in recent years. She helped produce the record and appears several times in the background throughout.
It’s Americana that feels holy, Southern church folk, wonderful music.
RIYL: Brandi Carlile and the more Southern (and less pop) Everly Brothers songs.
Other solid albums I heard recently:
Printer’s Devil by Ratboys. Very, very nice indie pop.
Sole Food by Deniro Farrar. Solid gritty rap.
And finally, the new Boomtown Rats warrants a mention. Solid album from great old band.

In a rejected pitch for a Silver Surfer story set in the future, Rick Remender would have revealed that Mephisto is behind Humanity's most evil tendencies.
The comics industry is more or less shut down due to coronavirus concerns, which leaves the comic book media with a big problem: what do we write about when there are no new comics? Thankfully, Rick Remender has come through as a one-man comic book media stimulus package, providing us with a near-limitless supply of articles about comics that might have been, even as we wait for the comics that hopefully one day will be.
So far, we've learned about his plans for taking over the X-books that never came to be after he told Marvel to drown in hobo piss in 2014 over the corporately-mandated Inhumans vs. X-Men. We've looked at his rejected pitch for a Spider-Man story bursting with bug-themed baddies and saw a veritable crap ton of artwork from his various creator-owned Image Comics series and the same from his Marvel days. We even got to read part of a Namor pitch that was basically Frank Miller's Daredevil: Born Again meets The Little Mermaid, and a wild Hearts of Darkness sequel pitch that would have seen the invention of Cosmic Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange in a polyamorous relationship with Clea and Brother Voodoo, and vampire Wolverine and werewolf Captain America doing their own version of Twilight, and a Ka-Zar pitch that saw the Savage Land relocated to Central Park.
And the next Rick Remender comic that never was involves the Silver Surfer, and aims to bring the character back to his Stan Lee and Jack Kirby origins.
Found a bunch of old notes and series pitches for Lobo, Namor, Silver Surfer, Iron Fist, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ka-Zar. All declined between 2006-2009. Whatever it is you want to do, it can take a ton of rejection before you get it. pic.twitter.com/TDOedulDgh

The story would have been set in the future after the Silver Surfer saved Earth from being eaten by Galactus and left Galactus as Earth's captive. Instead of being grateful for not becoming cosmic lunch, however, Mankind used Galactus to subjugate the galaxy. Now, the Surfer would have to ally with Galactus again to stop Mephisto, who is revealed to be behind everything humans have done. Check out the pitch below.
Sadly, if that pitch interests you, it's too late for it to ever happen.
The things I'm posting that were declined aren't things we have any interest in doing anymore. Please don't harass the publishers.

Except, of course, in our imaginations. And for that, we thank Rick Remender and raise a tall glass of hobo piss in his honor. Cheers!

Anime versions of Netflix originals seem to be all the rage. Netflix has been expanding its anime selection aggressively over the last few years. Some of the best new anime have been exclusively Netflix originals. Like that of Seis Manos or Castlevania. Not to mention, Netflix’s library of live-action originals, most of which have been very successful. It feels like there’s a new Netflix original almost every weekend. Now, Netflix has been doubling down by supplementing their originals into anime content. The Netflix original, Altered Carbon, recently got its own anime spin-off in Resleeved. There’s also reports that Netflix’s The Witcher series, will get its own series of companion anime movies.
Given Netflix’s affinity to mash up their originals into anime, I, of course, have some suggestions. So here are the 5 anime versions of Netflix originals that we need to see right away.
Narcos is one of Netflix’s best-watched original series. The show about Colombian drug cartels draws inspiration from true stories. The series made for binge-worthy seasons of television. Narcos was so successful there was even a spin-off in Narcos: Mexico. The tone of the series is very mature, featuring a lot of violence and gore. Which makes the series perfect for adaptation into anime.
An anime version of the Netflix original could further expand on this drug cartel world. Most adaptations change the original setting into the place of their origin. So for an anime version of Narcos, the setting could easily be Japan. Where Manga and anime originated from. The mafia underworld of Japan is in a lot of fiction, albeit, stereotypically. Most notably, the Yakuza is an infamous Japanese mob that’s been in many movies and series. Both in Asian cinema, as well as Hollywood content. A realistic anime version of Narcos could look at the crime world of Japan. Along with the hyper-violent action that the anime medium offers.
Black Mirror is a Netflix original series that is very much in the vein of The Twilight Zone. But with a specific theme. The episodic series has stories set in futures where technology has impacted humans. Sometimes positively, other times negatively. But almost always creepily. The stories are always contemplative and weird and make a social commentary on our world. An anime of Black Mirror could go even weirder, without any live-action restrictions. In anime form, Black Mirror could really push the boundaries of what is acceptable in society. Even episodes with monsters that act as a metaphor to the self-absorbed urges of mankind. Especially in the age of self absorbed social media. Just off the top of my head. The possibilities of magic and the supernatural could be a whole new world for the anime.
No anime version of a Netflix original is more ideal than Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. The graphic novel adaptation already lives in the realm of the supernatural. Not to mention the overt horror tone that the series has. The new adaptation is very dark for a former kid-friendly comic book. It’s all about teenagers dabbling in dark arts with dangerous consequences. A premise that feels tailor-made for an anime series. The anime version of Sabrina wouldn’t even have to modify the story too much. For example, the show already has anime staples working for it. A villain that’s the embodiment of the devil. The protagonists are witches practicing dark arts. A heroine who treads the line between dark and good, while also trying to live the teenage girl life. All concepts explored many times in shows such as Bleach or Death Note.
The Umbrella Academy is a comic book adaptation on Netflix. The series deals with adults with powers, raised as superheroes who aged out of those ideals. A dysfunctional family, having to come together to save the world. The series was a quirky, fast-paced action-adventure series. The characters and concepts made Umbrella Academy a great watch. And when it comes to anything superhero academy related, we need to look no further than anime. As a result, The anime version of this Netflix original would be a new take on an existing concept. My Hero Academia is already an anime about a school of superheroes. But on a larger scale than Umbrella Academy. The anime style of bloody graphic action would be perfectly suited to the series. While the outrageous stories, of talking gorillas and robot-moms is already so very very anime.
One of the best genres of the anime medium is science fiction. Some of the best anime of all time have been epic sci-fi adventures or about futuristic worlds. Akira, Gundam Wing, Ghost In The Shell are just a few examples. An anime version of Netflix’s original Lost In Space could easily be in the same vein. Lost In Space is an adaptation of a TV show from the 60s. The Netflix series keeps the family-friendly tone of the show. While also creating a bigger world with more challenges than the original series.
Similarly, an anime version of Lost In Space could very well do the same thing but enhance those elements. Imagine the worlds that the family visit being that much more elaborate done in the anime style. The iconic Robot from the series alone could get an amazing sci-fi spin as a mech droid style that anime does so well. Story-wise, the series would truly go beyond any other iteration. With ongoing adventures on different planets, meeting new people and stories. Not to mention elaborate storylines involving clones and the fall of humankind.
