GOAT: Man on the Corner by Genesis (1982)
We haven’t recognized one of the biggest bands of the 1980s yet in this list of the greatest songs of all time.
THE GREATEST OF ALL TUNES (G.O.A.T.) is a series of posts, ranking my favorite songs of all time. The master list is here, and I update it about every two weeks or when I have another 10 songs or so.
So what’s the greatest Genesis tune? For me, that’s easy. Man on the Corner.
Released in 1982, the song only went to #50 on the charts and has even been dropped off some of their best of comps. But it’s got sentimental attachment for me ‘cause a girl I liked used to write the lyrics on the margins of her notepaper back in my 12th Grade Shakespeare class. Plus, it’s the precursor to Collins’ better-known song about homeless, Another Day in Paradise.
I can’t tell you why I think it’s better than many other Genesis songs—and I do like quite a few of them—but I just do. I guess it comes down to taste. My taste. My blog, my taste.
Cover versions: Very hard to find…
