Netflix’s She-Ra Cancelled: Season 5 Will End the Series

Netflix’s She-Ra is cancelled after it’s fifth season. The upcoming season will be its last for the series. The new episodes will release in the Spring of 2020. The news comes as a blow to many ardent fans, like myself. The series quickly became one of the most beloved genre shows of its time. Spinning off of the original He-Man series, the show found a life and audience of its own. The series had incredible depictions of women’s empowerment, gender equality, and friendship. And the storytelling was simple and beautiful, in ways that appealed to all ages. So Netflix’s She-Ra being cancelled after season 5 being is sad news for many. But all good things must come to an end.

She-Ra’s Cancellation Reportedly Planned End To The Series

Creator Noelle Stevenson announced Netflix’s She-Ra cancellation, in an interview with EW. Stevenson did clarify that it’s not an abrupt cancellation. But that they knew going into the series that 5 seasons was the limit. 

I do feel very lucky because we knew from the very beginning what our episode order was, so we got to tailor the story very specifically to how long the show was gonna be. It was tailored to be 52 episodes, the length that it is, and that’s a real blessing for a storyteller because it means everything happens when it’s meant to happen.

It kind of makes sense that She-Ra had a pre-planned 5-season arc. And the series has definitely showed that through its previous four seasons. The story arcs for each character, or plot always unraveled at their own pace. This is only possible when an ending is in sight from the jump. But the ending of She-Ra season 4 painted a different picture entirely. 

Confirmation That Netflix’s She-Ra Is Cancelled Is Very Surprising

The ending of She-Ra season 4 doesn’t exactly gel with the idea of a 5 season planned arc. Season 4 completely upended the status quo for our characters and the world. Literally. The planet of Etheria shifted into a new dimension. There was also the destruction of She-Ra’s sword, the source of her powers. And the big bad the show built towards from season 1, Horde Prime, finally showed up. I even theorized the show would go on longer in my She-Ra season 4 review. It felt that there may be more storytelling opportunities for the series beyond season 5. Stories set in a new world with a new villain. Although, I could be wrong. It is unclear if the inevitability of Netflix’s She-Ra’s cancellation was set in stone or if they are pulling the plug early. 

She-Ra’s Cancellation Also Leaves Questions About Netflix’s He-Man Shows

She-Ra is not the only Masters Of The Universe franchise Netflix has. The mega-streamer is in the thick of producing two different He-Man animated shows. A He-Man original series sequel anime by Kevin Smith is in development. An entirely separate He-Man reboot is also in the works, as a CGI animated series. Stevenson even joked of a potential Christmas special with Smith’s He-Man at a convention. All that now seems unlikely. Where She-Ra would have fit into all these versions of He-Man was unsure. Given the different animation styles, the possibility of a crossover was also uncertain. It seems now that She-Ra will have nothing to do with the other shows. If a different iteration of She-Ra will appear in these other projects is still also unclear.

She-Ra Being Cancelled Is A Blow To Fans

Regardless of the how’s and why’s surrounding the fact that Netflix’s She-Ra is cancelled, it’s still a blow to fans. She-Ra was one of the best all-ages television shows out there. There is going to be a considerable vacuum left in the wake of She-Ra’s cancellation. Very few shows can deal with the topics in the show, in a family-friendly manner that’s not cheesy or over the top. The storytelling was subtle and the writing impeccable. 

She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power season 5 will premiere on Netflix in Spring 2020.
