Kirby Design Director Would Like To Make A New Spin-Off

There are a lot of people who would like to see HAL Labs and Nintendo make more Kirby games, including their own staff. We recently got a couple of Kirby titles from Nintendo with the release of the Switch, with the release of Kirby Star Allies and Super Kirby Clash. Not to mention his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which was pretty much a given since the character has been a part of the franchise since its debut on the N64. The character has always been popular with gamers and the Nintendo audience in general, but the majority of his games are either platformers or action titles. Which is something a member of the Hal Labs staff would like to change. In a recent interview with Famitsu, the company chatted with several staffers from HAL as part of a celebration of the studio's 40th anniversary. Some of the developers interviewed included General Director Shinya Kumazaki, Lead Action Programmer Katsuyoshi Sumitomo, and Design Director Riki Fuhrmann.

How would you like a new Kirby title that wasn't an action game?

During the interview, they got asked about the Kirby series of titles, which lead to what they would like to make next, and we got some pretty interesting responses. Here's a transcript from Nintendo Everything.

Sumitomo: I really want the next thing we create to be called the pinnacle of Kirby games. I'm positive the Kirby series can become even more fun!

Fuhrmann: For me, personally, I'd really like to make a non-action Kirby spin-off game. We're going to have a wide variety of Kirby coming out in the future.

Kumamoto: Each entry in the series has its merits, but I want to make something that exceeds previous games.

Yeah, you read that right, the Design Director would like a new spin-off title that has nothing to do with being a platformer or an action title. What it would end up being is anyone's guess, but considering people are still playing Kirby's Dream Course to this very day should show you there's potential in completely silly titles that have little to do with the character's universe.
