Castlevania Season 4 Renewal Confirmed by Netflix

Castlevania season 4 renewal was confirmed by Netflix, and we can’t be happier! The next season announcement of the horror anime comes just weeks after the debut of Castlevania season 3. That last season of the Netflix original is one of the best of the series. So this season 4 announcement is welcome news, and not as much of a surprise as we might think. While Netflix rarely orders so many seasons of their live-actions originals, their original anime is a different matter entirely.

Castlevania Led Netflix’s Push Into Anime

Castlevania was the first original anime series that Netflix pushed, and it was a huge success. The series featured the tale of a tragic Dracula, who swore revenge on humanity after the death of his human wife. Love softened the Dracula we all knew. But the loss of that love turned him into the soulless vampire in most fictional depictions. Castlevania gives us three heroes from various backgrounds who take on Dracula and his legions of night monsters and creatures roaming the country. Then the world gets more interesting with new characters and politics in later seasons. Together, you have one of the most interesting anime currently on television.

Castlevania Season 4 Confirmation Was Quicker Than Other Seasons

Castlevania season 4 renewal confirmed Isaac.

Castlevania is such a beloved series, that fans tend to get a little anxious between its seasons. It also doesn’t help that the makers of Castlevania, Powerhouse Animation, tend to take their time. The animation studio known for Seis Manos became even more lauded thanks to Castlevania. Unlike other series and films, Castlevania’s trailers come only when the makers are ready. Even season 3 was teased for a long couple of months before fans saw anything or got any confirmations. Which means that fans usually have had to wait months for any news between seasons. So this Castlevania season 4 announcement coming so quickly after season 3 is a shocker. Fans were hoping there would be a season 4, but were worried they’d have to wait for confirmation.

Castlevania Season 4 Renewal Confirmed But No Release Date Yet

The Castlevania season 4 confirmation came via Twitter. The tweet included a brief video with a scene from season 3 that shows a mirror. The mirror in the show was given to Isaac by a merchant. It is meant to look into people and places across vast distances. This time, Netflix used the mirror to confirm that season 4 is coming soon. While there’s no release date, it’s safe to say that we won’t be getting Castlevania season 4 anytime this year. Possibly not until the latter half of 2021.

What To Expect From Castlevania Season 4

Castlevania season 4 renewal confirmed Saint Germain

As I mentioned in my Castlevania season 3 review, there’s a lot of story that could be in the next season. Season 3 in many ways was another adventurous story of character development. All our heroes and villains (anti-heroes now?) went through a lot. The season 3 ending saw them develop, given their experiences. We won’t spoil it here, but we do in our review of the season. So check there if you’re all caught up. The biggest question is the fate of Alucard, and what path he will take now that he’s defining his own path. (Tell us your theories, too!)

We also wonder what will happen between Trevor and Sypha. Can they survive the dark twist in the ending of season 3? Also, how does Saint Germain and his Infinite Corridor fit into the future development of the story? Will we see the other incarnations of the Castlevania video game series in the anime? Finally fans are hoping to see Isaac redeemed, though he could go even deeper into his desire for revenge? These answers will have to wait until the release of Castlevania season 4.

REWIND REVIEW: Tales from Nocturnia #2 — "No Frills, No Nuance"

The second act of a trilogy of issues, this fantasy tale of conflicts between rival sovereigns has all the basic elements of a good TTRPG campaign — a missing king with a number of secrets, a repentant and charismatic executioner, even adventurous maidens with agency and motivations. Unfortunately, aside from said executioner and a single "Hail Mary" plot twist for one of the antagonists, the characters are right out of a 5e manual with no frills, no nuance, no "oomph." For example, a group of knights, maybe? Adventurers? Anyway, these three guys venture deep into enemy territory to retrieve their king, who they erroneously believe has been kidnapped by said foreign power. Why these three? What specific qualifications did they have that led them to this mission? How do they know each other, and how does that interplay affect their work? This issue does not tell you, and that's a deficit.

Likewise, the "evil" foreign power is drawn out with cliches instead of details, and the big surprise ending is the sort of nuance needed to make them more fully realized. There's a weird lettering choice — white letters with black outlines on colored balloons — that's super distracting and inhibits readability. The art's okay, with acceptable combat scenes and solid enough command of the fundamentals of anatomy. Here's the thing: with the plethora of fantasy comics coming out these days, from all the licensed D&D stuff to the Stranger Comics to the Critical Role stuff, this doesn't meet the same standard, visually or in terms of characterization. If this book came out twenty years ago, it'd be groundbreaking. This far into the millennium, it's having a hard time keeping pace as others level up around it. RATING: MEH.

DOUBLE ISSUE: "Something Sinister This Way Comes" is 40 pages of medieval madness that picks up right where Issue #1 "A Kingdom in Shambles" Leaves off.

The battle that the leaderless Nocturnians fear is now a reality closing in on all sides. Their elite are away from the stronghold, and a spy has been relaying their every move to the darkened forces of Sinisteria.

Will those remaining be able to uncover the sinister plot bearing down on them and prepare before it's too late? And even if they do, will they have the numbers to repel such an invasion?

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1-11 (1990): Quest for the Shield/World of Mutants

Jim Valentino is the writer/artist of this mediocre book that, frankly, I’m not sure is canon.  I mean, Vance Astro is a canonical character as a member of the New Warriors, and Firelord certainly is as well, but these are stories that take place in the future and so many futures later become “possible futures” or erased entirely, so I’ll move quickly through the summaries here.

Plus, it’s not shocking to anyone that these are just not that good.  I kept hoping each issue would be different, but my reaction was always the same when I read them.

This story served to re-introduce the original Guardians line-up…

…and establish an alliance with former Galactus’ herald Firelord.

There’s a villainous race of armored aliens called Stark…

And a villain called Taserface.

OK, that’s kinda silly/c00l.  These issues don’t suck, they’re just subpar.  If you’re a big fan of the team or of Marvel’s space stories, you’ll probably like these well enough.

The story shows them searching for and finding the original adamantium shield used by Captain America.

Then, issue #7 introduces Malevolence, who is basically the 31st Century’s M3phisto.  She becomes a recurring villain for the group.  Issues #7-11, loosely, are the “world of mutants” arc.

Only #9-11 are cover-billed as the World of Mutants story, but #7 and 8 involve travel to the world of mutants, so I’m including them.

I’ll do another “group summary” of multiple issues in another post, after I’ve read more.
